On Thursday, April 12th, Georgia Tech Campus Services and the Falun Dafa Club are hosting a screening of the documentary film Badass Beauty Queen. The movie will be shown in Room 123 of the East Architecture Building from 6:30-8 pm.
“Badass Beauty Queen” may have a glittery title and artwork on the surface, but there is much more to this story than meets the eye. This film tells the story of Anastasia, a young woman born and raised in China, who moved to Canada at age thirteen. Here she learned that what she was taught in school about her native country was far from the truth. As she grew up, she turned her focus towards advocating for the human rights of Chinese people whose voices were silenced.
Anastasia’s attempts to speak up for the rights for her people lead her to run for—and win—the title of Miss World Canada. Inspired by a former Miss Canada and the motto “Beauty with a Purpose,” Anastasia uses her platform to expose the violence against women in her country. The film illustrates how the Chinese regime tried to silence those who seek to uncover their human rights violations. It also shows how a UK-based company, Miss World Organization, tries to silence the very same act a little closer to home, in our very own Washington DC.
